Economic benefits of improver bulls on the Quebec beef cattle sector

We wish, by demonstrating the economic benefits of proven improver bulls, to increase the use of genetically improver bulls. This action, with the creation of a website to promote bulls, would help improve the profitability of all the links in the chain of the Quebec beef sector.
Collaborative project carried out for the Producteurs de bovins du Québec (PBQ), in collaboration with the Bovi-Expert Group.

Goals

The main objective is to demonstrate the positive economic benefits of improver bulls in order to increase their use and improve the profitability of all links in the chain of the Quebec beef sector. More specifically:

  • Develop the collective and industry vision of the Quebec beef sector

  • Describe the methodologies and economic values used for the development of selection indicators and for the calculation of the economic benefits of genetic progress

  • Develop 3 target models of the Quebec beef industry that will make it possible to calculate the economic benefits of genetic improvement in them, namely: a targeted cow-calf model, a balanced model (cow-calf/feedlot) and a terminal production targeted model (fed cattle)

  • Calculate the economic benefits of improver bulls according to these 3 targeted production models in order to demonstrate the economic importance of genetic improvement on the sector

  • Proceed with the promotion/dissemination of the information and calculation tools developed.
