Adaptation and transfer of a technological system to the farm to improve the profitability of cow-calf herds in Quebec

Over the past two decades, many expanding cow-calf farms have moved away from PATBQ due to the heavy workload in taking measurements and the regular monitoring required. One of the objectives is therefore to make it more user-friendly and easier to enter production data from these farms in order to increase the number of producers in the PATBQ database, as well as the proportion of beef cows.
Goals

The main objective of the project is to reappropriate and adapt an effective on-farm data collection technology, in order to promote this technology to all cow-calf producers in Quebec to facilitate their herd monitoring and improve the profitability of their business. More specifically:

  • Demonstrate that technologies greatly facilitate the acquisition of performance data on the farm, on batches of calves and breeding stock

  • Simplify, speed up, reduce errors in data capture

  • Develop an interface facilitating data integration

  • Automate the transfer of data collected on the farm to livestock management software, such as PATBQ, in order to optimize its use

  • Promote available technologies

  • Reintroduce PATBQ farms with a large number of cows.
